Light poles are available in a variety of materials which includes steel, concrete, and fiberglass. But if you want a light pole that combines strength, aesthetics, corrosion resistance, and longevity, aluminum is the way to go.
Aluminum light poles are also quite versatile. They are used for a multitude of applications and are easy to install because they are lightweight compared to most other materials. Among their many applications are street lights, highways, urban centers, car dealerships, parking lots, commercial centers, and residential areas.
What Are the Advantages of Aluminum Light Poles?
Aluminum Light Poles Advantages: Let's compare aluminum light poles to the other two most common types: steel and fiberglass.
Aluminum vs. Steel
Steel is the most common material used for light poles. It is stronger and less expensive than aluminum, but the advantages end there.
- Aluminum poles are much lighter weight than steel poles. Lightweight aluminum poles are easier (and safer) to install because they don't require the same types of equipment needed to lift them. This also makes them cheaper to install than steel poles.
- Aluminum poles don't rust and are corrosion-resistant light poles in general. This is not the case with steel poles. This makes them ideal for installations in coastal areas due to the presence of moisture and salt in the air. Additionally, steel poles are not recommended for direct burial installations. Aluminum poles can handle being partially installed below ground, however.
- Aluminum poles more than offset their cost by having a much longer lifespan than steel poles. A typical steel pole has a lifespan of 15-30 years. By comparison, aluminum poles can last 50 years or more. Their replacement rate is much lower than any other type of light pole and they don't require nearly as much maintenance as steel poles. This provides significant cost savings in the long run.
Aluminum vs. Fiberglass
Fiberglass poles have many advantages. They are the lightest of all the light pole materials and are immune to corrosion. They are also non-conductive and fire-resistant. However, aluminum poles have certain advantages over fiberglass.
- Aluminum poles are less expensive. In fact, fiberglass poles are the most expensive of all light poles.
- Aluminum poles are stronger and more durable than fiberglass poles. They can better withstand strong winds and have a longer lifespan, usually 20-30 years longer. Combined with the cost-effectiveness of aluminum poles, this is clearly an advantage.
Which Industries Should Consider Aluminum Light Poles?
