Municipal & Public Works Lighting Solutions

Complete Municipal & Public Works Light Kits

Parks, Community Centers, Public Works Buildings

No matter the park size, we have the right lighting solution.

Most of us don’t realize how essential street lighting is. We depend on it without knowing it – until you find yourself fumbling for your keys in a dark parking lot, or calling in a service request for street light outages. That’s why city ordinances are put in place to mandate proper municipal street lighting and ensure public safety. The style of a street light is also typically overlooked by the average person. Commercial street lights are available in a variety of finishes, heights, light fixture wattages, and designs – from the practical, functional modern street lights to decorative street lights that line the roads of large city blocks or gated communities.

Types of Municipal Street Lighting

  • Municipal Street Lights
  • Municipal Solar Street Lights
  • Municipal Light Plant
  • LED Street Lights
  • Decorative Street Lights

Park Lighting

For public parks, it's important to tailor lighting solutions that focus on safety, functionality, and aesthetics. A well-lit park offers many benefits to the community. A properly planned lighting system will:

  • Enhance the safety and security of residents.
  • Accentuate physical features for a more aesthetic appeal.
  • Extend usable hours.
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere.

An effective lighting plan for a park will account for the different types of activity zones like pathways and baseball fields. Each zone will have specific lighting requirements which will dictate the types of light fixtures needed.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What are the Best Types of Lights for Street and Park Lighting?

In the past, the best lighting options for streets and parks were HID (high-intensity discharge) lights such as metal halide and high-pressure sodium. However, LED lighting systems have become the gold standard over the past twenty years.

LED lighting has an advantage over HID in every aspect. They are today's most energy-efficient, durable, and longest-lasting lighting systems. Significant cost savings are realized due to their superior efficiency and low maintenance. And unlike HID lights, their light quality does not begin to degrade over time. Its brightness and color rendering capabilities are second to none.

Why is Public Lighting Important?

Proper municipal lighting and commercial lighting is important for functioning in the dark and ensuring the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers at night. That’s why municipal street lights and commercial street lights are installed, with city lighting suggestions such as installing breakaway poles or transformer bases, which quickly break away or yield to a vehicle when contact is made with the pole.

It’s also essential to install light poles that are the right height – 12-15 ft. tall – and distance apart to ensure sufficient brightness while avoiding too much lighting, which can lead to light pollution.

What Kind of Municipal Regulations Exist for City LED Lights?

Municipal ordinances on LED street lights differ from city to city, or state to state. Particular states like South Carolina require street light poles to be placed an approximate distance from the road to help prevent vehicular accidents – in which case a taller light pole may be recommended, along with an 8 or 10 foot arm mounted to the pole.

Outdoor lighting regulations and suggestions can also be specific to a heavily populated city in order to comply with local lighting ordinances, environmental associations, and lighting association guidelines, such as The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES)

Are LED Lights Environmentally Friendly?

Yes! LED lights are an optimal lighting solution that produces less heat, consume less energy, and have a longer lifespan. Lighting controls enable timers or photocells to automatically turn street lights on and off during dawn and dusk – saving on energy and cost. Additionally, LEDs do not contain harzardous components such as mercury, so they don't require special procedures for disposal when their life runs out.

What lighting designs are recommended for different park areas?

For pedestrian pathways and bicycle lanes, flood lights and area lights are mounted on light poles to provide general lighting, much like street lighting. Pole height should be compatible with the size of the area being illuminated and its type of usage. Spacing should provide enough illumination without creating excessive glare or dark spots.

To highlight particular areas or points of interest or provide accent lighting, spotlights and bollard lights are ideal. Ground-level spotlights are used to focus narrow light on landscape features like building facades and trees. Bollard lights are suitable for illuminating entrances, gardens, and seating areas while reducing light pollution due to their low profile, ground-level installations.

Areas with sports activities will require brighter lighting compared to other activity zones. LED sports lights are a perfect solution for these areas and they can be mounted to light poles to properly illuminate the action for players and spectators.

How can parks maintain effective lighting while minimizing light pollution?

Light pollution is generally defined as excessive artificial light that spills over into unwanted areas or causes glare which results in eye discomfort. Light pollution can be mitigated with proper light design and fixture selection.

Mitigating strategies involve directing light downward through the use of full-cutoff luminaires or adjusting a fixture’s brightness and color temperature (CCT).

Another strategy involves proper light pole fixture mounting height and spacing. Proper pole placement and mounting height for park lighting fixtures enhance visibility while preventing unwanted light spillover or glare.
